How to Be a Great Board Member

A good board member brings enthusiasm and energy, as well as knowledge to the board. They are aware of their responsibilities and establish the direction for the company to reach its goals for business and meet legal obligations. They are well-versed in the organization’s culture and operations, vision, mission and values. They are also well-versed in the roles and responsibilities of the board as well as the principles of good governance.

It is crucial that a good board member is willing to question and challenge major decisions. Often, this is done in the form of questions or issues that are designed to help the CEO identify the issue they might not have spotted and look a bit further ahead than the CEO is looking or provide a fresh perspective. A good board member can handle this in a manner that is respectful, without being personally offensive or threaty.

Great boards are populated with board members who are committed to the mission of the organization and inspire others. They also communicate effectively and make decisions quickly. A good board member should be prepared for meetings of the board and other events. It is crucial to arrive at the meeting with the agenda, papers of the board, and committee reports.

The ability to be a great board member is as much about attitude as it is about background, expertise or education. Exceptional board members are constantly considering what they can do to best help the association and the other board members. They don’t make debates personal they seek to resolve conflicts, and can provide solutions that bring opposing sides together.
